Seattle to New York City
January 15th -May 12th, 2002
Beginning January 15, 2002, people from all over the world will walk across the United States carrying a flame left from the embers of the bombing of Hiroshima, Japan. We will be walking for world peace, disarmament, to end the Star Wars Missile Defense Program, and to save mother earth from further destruction.
In 1945, after the United States bombed Hiroshima a man named Mr. Yamamoto collected some of the embers left from the bombing and took them back to his home. Mr. Yamamoto was filled with hostility because of the bombing. His grandmother preserved the embers and kindled a flame which was used to illuminate the familyﾕs Buddhist altar. While this fire symbolized for Mr. Yamamoto anger, for his grandmother it symbolized love, memory of her son who had died. Over the next twelve years Mr. Yamamotoﾕs grandmother tended the fire. During this time Mr. Yamamoto underwent a complete change of heart and the flame transformed into a flame of love for him as well. In 1968 a ﾔPeace Monument Flameﾕ was inaugurated in the village of Hoshino. Mr. Yamamotoﾕs flame became a symbol for world peace and other flames were kindled from it and set up across Japan. From these original embers of Hiroshima a fire will be carried across the United States.

We are the spiritual energy that is thousands of times stronger than nuclear energy. Our energy is the combined will of all people with the spirit of the Natural World. |
During the 20th century unprecedented numbers of people have died due to war, more than ever before in human history. Not only have people died during wartime conflicts but also as a result of the construction of the modern war machine. The health and well-being of humans, the earth, air, and water have been tremendously harmed due to the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Even before the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during WWII this destructive process had begun. In 1942 the United States government began the secret Manhattan Project , creating the first atomic bomb.
Japan hasnﾕt been the only victim of the nuclear bomb. Disrespecting the sovereignty and life of Native Americans, many of their lands have been used for the extraction of plutonium and uranium and the dumping of nuclear wastes. By walking and carrying the Hiroshima flame to many Indian nations we wish to show how these lands and peoples are directly connected to the devastation created by nuclear proliferation.

Star Wars Missile System Returns
The Bush Administration, the Pentagon, and weapons contractors are trying to bring back the Star Wars Nuclear Defense System. This is an attempt on the part of the United States to control and dominate space by putting into space nuclear powered weapons and developing ground launched missile interceptors. Those who support Star Wars claim this system is necessary for national defense. This is far from the truth. Star Wars is not a defense system but a first strike weapons system. Star Wars is fueling the arms race, not helping to stop it. Countries, such as China, India, and Pakistan, who are already building nuclear weapons have stated they will increase their weaponsﾕ arsenals if plans for Star Wars continue and nations that arenﾕt building weapons, will start. Star Wars is a violation of already existing non-proliferation international treaties, of which the United States is a signatory.
While Star Wars will not increase national security it will increase the profits made by the weapons contractors who are heavily invested in this system. Corporations such as TRW, Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Raytheon. The Bush Administration is directly linked to these corporations. For example, Vice President Dick Cheney was on the board of TRW and his wife is still on the board of Lockheed Martin.
The Star Wars laser weapons will require huge amounts of energy to power them. The proposal is to provide electrical power for the system by using nuclear reactors floating in space. Not only are the laser weapons increasing instability in the world but the nuclear reactors are incredibly dangerous and will create more toxic waste.
Scientists, including 50 Noble Prize laureates, say Star Wars wont work. It is estimated that a missile system of this kind could cost up to a trillion dollars. This attempt to unilaterally dominate the world is robbing taxpayer dollars from human needs such as health care, education, and the environment. The only moral and realistic solution to creating a secure world is the total elimination of nuclear weapons worldwide. While this is not a simple matter it is the only real choice.
